Enthuaism is Important to be a GM

Today is Satrday. I went to the Oahu Country Club for the CMAA chapter. I really know that being a General Manager is very hard. To conclude all the information from the General Manager, there is one attitude to be the best manager--enthuaism.


Enthuaism is the most important steps to be the GM. That's why they really want to help the students to be success. Gary Oliveria, the COO at Pacific Club, said that be a GM need to be people person. If you are not people person, you really cannot be the club manager.


There is an idioms from Mike Ako, the General Manager at Outrigger Canoe Club. "Work Hard, Play Hard". Although he likes ocean, he works hard. That's why he can be the GM at the club. He started to be a manager at hotel, and got the experience to go up.

During the whole party, the students at CMAA can see their deep career future. Therefore, they want to join the CMAA by using the activities to increase their networking.

Waikiki Yacht Club observation and visit


Waikiki Yacht Club is located at the Ala Moana Park. It founded at 1966. Duke Kahanamoku was one of the founder for the Yacht Club.


Guy Azuma is the General Manager of Waikiki Yacht Club. I visited to the Yacht Club on September 24, 2010. It gave me some observations about the club operation. Although I have no experience about the Food and Beverage, I really know that working as a General Manager at F & B is not an easy job.


As a general manager, you need to remember you are the leader of the team. During the observation at the Yacht Club, Mr. Azuma's gives their team member a very good role model. He really stays in character and play the part with the staff. I observed him for more than three hours in the club. He hadn't stop for a minute for resting. Really, a good manager need to play the part with his or her staff, and gives his or her staff a good role model for them to go above and beyond.


A role model is not enough for a club to achieve its goals. They need to make their staff have some freedom for them. Not just give them a good working environment, make them enjoy it. He really wants his staff enjoy their working environment. Therefore, it makes the staff keep passionate and enthuaism, or even involve about their jobs. Make them know they are Ohana.


However, a good manager really need to know which area need to be more serious. I really observed his expectation and behavior from backstage to onstage. Mr. Azuma gets a higher expectation about the kitchen operations than onstage. He needs to care about all the order get the same taste and same time. He really don't want to delay the member's waiting time. When I got to the backstage, I really observed his and his team member working very hard. He never stopped for a second from the kitchen. Really! A good manager need to have so many experience about each plate and how it cook. You need to get more expereince than the chef to control the restaurant operations.


Being a club manager is not an easy position. Once I knew that a manager just control the whole club by using his or her words. I really knew that a manager need to play the part with the staff. That's really what a club manager is, and that's what it can help the club to growth and success.
